AnnualCreditReport.com: Actually Free. Really.
This site exists to be skeptical of "free." So when free is real, we say that too — and this one is the gold standard.
They say
"Free credit reports from all three bureaus." ✓ True.
Why is this one legit when so many "free credit" offers aren't? One word: law. Federal law (the FACT Act) requires the three nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to give you your credit report for free, and AnnualCreditReport.com is the official, centralized site the bureaus were required to create for it. It's not a business model. It's a legal obligation.
The rarest kind of free: nobody upstream is trying to make money on the transaction, because the transaction exists by statute, not by strategy.
What you get
- Your full credit report from each of the three bureaus — the actual underlying file: accounts, balances, payment history, inquiries, collections.
- Since the pandemic era, the bureaus have made reports available weekly, not just annually, through the official site.
- No credit card. No trial. No subscription lurking behind the button.
The catch (there's always a catch — here it's small)
- Reports, not scores. The free report doesn't include your credit score. The bureaus would love to sell you score-monitoring subscriptions along the way — decline the upsells and you've paid nothing.
- Lookalikes. The bigger danger is the ecosystem around it: search for "free credit report" and you'll find ad-funded lookalikes, "free score" apps that monetize your financial profile with loan and card offers, and trial-based monitoring products. The word "free" in this category is mostly bait — this site is the exception, not the rule.
- Identity verification questions can be genuinely hard (old addresses, loan amounts from years ago). Annoying, but it's a security feature, not a dark pattern.
How to use it well
The checklist
- Type the address directly: annualcreditreport.com. Don't get there through ads.
- Stagger the bureaus. Pull one bureau's report every few months instead of all three at once — free monitoring, all year.
- Read for surprises: accounts you don't recognize and inquiries you didn't make are the early smoke of identity theft. Dispute errors with the bureau directly — disputing is free too.
- Decline every upsell. Anything asking for a card number is a different product wearing the same outfit.
